Sobotka's failed summit

19.09.2016 - EB

Bohuslav Sobotka told Czech TV yesterday that the Leave people in the UK will have a problem explaining to voters why they weren't able to negotiate the Brexit package that they had promised. If the media ever ask him, Sobotka will have an analogous problem explaining why he promised to bring up wage convergence as one of two priorities at the Bratislava summit on Fri. and then came away empty-handed. The Bratislava Declaration and Roadmap says nothing about wage convergence, unless perhaps you want to decrypt the following sentence as applying to it: "Decision on extension of the European Fund for Strategic Investment in light of evaluation." The EFSI "helps to finance strategic investments in key areas such as infrastructure, research and innovation, education, renewable energy and energy efficiency." These are precisely the areas that interest Sobotka. Discerning voters will soon begin to understand that behind his call for wage convergence isn't a concern for the workers, but rather an effort to increase EU subsidies for companies that belong to ČSSD a.s.
