Pojar's defense of attacks on civilians

25.11.2024 - EB

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thur. for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and ex-Defense Min. Yoav Gallant, and the Czech foreign ministry said that it will continue to observe its international obligations. Netanyahu and Gallant are charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, including intentionally directing attacks against the civilian Gazan population. When asked in May by Aktuálně.cz if Netanyahu would be arrested and extradited to The Hague if the warrants were issued and Netanyahu visited the CR, National Security Adviser Tomáš Pojar gave a vague response that some interpreted to mean that the CR would not fulfill its duties toward the ICC. More serious was Pojar's defense of the attacks by Israel on the civilian Gazan population. They have now been officially declared by the ICC to be a suspected war crime. After Russia invaded Ukraine, Supreme State Prosecutor Igor Stříž declared that any public support of Russia could be considered a crime. Unless he wants to lose credibility in his remaining time in office, Stříž will need to consider whether Pojar should now be charged.
