How Pavel and Baxa take over Czech foreign policy

28.05.2026 - EB

Pres. Petr Pavel's criticism of the Czech government in Estonia yesterday, following similar remarks in The Guardian and Financial Times, indicates that he's convinced that the cabinet will decide officially on June 8 to keep him off the list for the Nato summit in July. Pavel will then be able to submit a jurisdictional complaint outlining all the ways the government of Andrej Babiš has systematically harassed him and used rather underhanded methods to put limits on his constitutional authority. Likewise, the cabinet will then be able to submit its own grievance list documenting Pavel's comments and actions that go against official Czech foreign policy. Then Chief Justice Josef Baxa of the Constitutional Court will take over. He spoke last week about storm clouds gathering and seemingly called on just-minded people to use the full force of their positions to oppose what is happening in the world. He'll finally have the chance to back up his words with action by handing the key to Czech foreign policy to the president.
