Rescue the IMF

30.03.2010 - EB

Czechs like to be in the thick of things. Many of those who were against the U.S. radar were furious when Obama killed the idea, because they could no longer complain that it was being shoved down their throats. MP Lubomír Zaorálek of ČSSD now feels left out of the EU debate about rescuing Greece. It's dividing Europe, he told Respekt, yet we don't even know the cabinet's opinion on it. Czechs can't afford to be excluded from the key discussions in Europe, he said. Well, now is their chance. When the bailout of Greece fails because the IMF can't handle the magnitude of the problem, the debate will turn to how to save the IMF itself. Increasing the contributions from member nations will no longer be enough, because they're broke. We'll need to take it up a level. A good Socialist solution would be to create an Interplanetary Monetary Fund. Why should Earth bear all this growing risk alone?
