mind game - a series of deliberate actions or responses planned for psychological effect on another, typically for amusement or competitive advantage;

to offset something - to counteract by having an opposite force or effect;

conversely - used to introduce a statement that reverses one that has just been made or referred to;

to screw someone up - to cause someone to be emotionally or mentally disturbed;

to forego/forgo - to go without, do without;

crappy - (mildly vulgar slang) worthless; disgusting or unpleasant.
