Obama or Romney - does it matter?

25.10.2012 - EB

Czech newsrooms are gearing up for what might be their most- extensive coverage yet of a U.S. presidential election. Reporters are preparing to leave for the States, and all-night analysis is being organized. But does the outcome really matter for Czechs? A Romney victory would bring few palpable changes in U.S.- Czech relations. There would naturally be a new U.S. ambassador and probably a slight shift toward more business and less human rights. A Republican administration might have snarled louder at the Czechs for wanting to cancel the bilateral investment treatment, but Miroslav Kalousek will likely achieve this before the inauguration anyway. Czechs who want the U.S. to take a tougher stance against Russia might prefer Romney, esp. if one Kremlophilic Czech president is followed by another. Otherwise, Czechs probably have no little reason to wait with bated breath for the election results.
