Congratulations, Petra, but....
Petra Kvitová has made her country very proud with her second singles title at Wimbledon. She told Blesk today that her job is to play tennis and that she isn't very interested in the Kč 60m prize money she won. Someone who is no doubt very interested in that bundle of cash is a certain Miroslav Černošek, her manager and the man who discovered her. From what we understand about how the Czech sports industry works, we suspect that he will see more money from her Wimbledon win than she does. The way future young Czech stars in the main sports (tennis, soccer, hockey) are "discovered" is that someone like Černošek sends a representative around as soon as a tyke shows promise and waves cash in front of the very, very ambitious parents. The result is a one-sided contract similar to what is sometimes referred to in the recording industry as indentured servitude. But a contract is a contract, right?
Glossary of difficult words
a bundle - a large amount of money;tyke - a small child;
indentured servitude - a voluntary labor system whereby young people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years.
