ČSSD takes one for the anti-Babiš team
Two opinion polls show so far that ČSSD lost the most in the government crisis. According to CVVM's numbers, ČSSD lost 13% of its voter base over the past month, while Median's figures put the loss of its core voters at 33%. Some members of the anti-Babiš media nevertheless argue that PM Bohuslav Sobotka came out of the crisis the best. Is this bias on the part of these commentators, or is there something to it? Try looking at it from Sobotka's perspective. He has a vision of a country without the power tandem of Andrej Babiš and Miloš Zeman. They present a threat to parliamentary liberal democracy, he says, and ČSSD wants to speak openly of this. By attacking Babiš and Zeman and embracing Miroslav Kalousek's message from Nov. 2015, Sobotka is saying that the fate of the CR is more important than the fate of ČSSD. His sacrifice could even end up being good for ČSSD under one key condition - that the anti-Babiš team holds together after the elections.
