The new Pied Pipers

25.06.2019 - EB

For decades, the Pied Pipers leading the children astray have been the adults who shield each new generation from the reality of how the world works. Adults control the schools, the media and the workplace and are constantly presenting a short-term view that doesn't take into account the basic laws of nature. This shows itself in the erosion of all foundations of society, and most urgently in the form of debt that can never be repaid and wars that can't be won. Donald Trump, as a prime example of this, criticized the endless wars in his reelection speech and then nearly started another one with Iran. In the internet age, the Pied Pipers leading the adults astray are increasingly the youth who don't understand the world enough to know that their simplistic solutions to climate change, inequality and governance are the final push over the cliff. Piper Mikuláš Minář epitomizes this when he says that the only way to keep the masses together is to avoid having concrete opinions.
