Impeaching Bakala
Unlike in the U.S. Senate, where Mitt Romney crossed party lines yesterday in one of the two impeachment votes, no Czech MP from the "presidential parties" took such a historic step in the final impeachment vote against Miloš Zeman. No MP from ANO, ČSSD, KSČM or SPD voted on Sept. 26 to remove Zeman. In the other recent Czech "impeachment" vote, no present MP voted last week against censuring Zdeněk Bakala for failing to appear before the OKD commission. Not even Ondřej Veselý of ČSSD or Miroslav Kalousek of TOP 09, who were the only two to vote against accepting the OKD report, stood up for Bakala. Not a single MP disputed that it is a violation of the law for someone living abroad to decline to appear before a Czech parliamentary commission. We questioned this in Aug. 2018 and still have our doubts. Is this the kind of "impartial justice" that Romney spoke about yesterday? No, but no one ever lost political points by voting against Zdeněk Bakala.
