What if America changed course on China?

23.09.2020 - EB

A key factor in Donald J. Trump's victory in 2016 was his aggressive policy toward China. "We can't continue to allow China to rape our country," he declared in May 2016. This confrontational approach is serving him again in his reelection campaign. He told the U.N. yesterday that China must be held accountable for unleashing the covid-19 plague upon the world. In the Friday Edition three weeks ago we documented some of the steps Trump has taken with regard to Taiwan and how the trip there of Senate Pres. Miloš Vystrčil fit right into Trump's plans. Vystrčil and his handlers don't want to admit that they became the lackeys of one great power in their effort to avoid being the lackeys of another. Ironically, they must now hope that Trump wins reelection and maintains his tough anti-China line, despite growing opposition to this from U.S. businesses. Otherwise, the Czechs who have tied themselves to Taiwan might be left to face the wrath of Beijing all by their lonesome.

Glossary of difficult words

to unleash - to cause (a strong or violent force) to be released or become unrestrained;

handler - a person who trains or manages another person; a publicity agent;

wrath - extreme anger;

all by one's lonesome - completely alone.
