Mail-in balloting and 'stolen' elections

25.06.2024 - EB

A poll in April by The Economist and YouGov found (on Page 66) that 36% of the American adults surveyed thought that Joe Biden didn't legitimately win the 2020 presidential elections. Only 1% of Biden's voters thought that the results weren't legitimate, compared to 76% of Donald Trump's. A separate CBS/YouGov poll in Jan. found that 49% of respondents expect violence in future presidential elections from the side that loses. MP Radek Vondráček of ANO said in Parliament last week that although U.S. courts upheld the 2020 results, the lingering impression remained with many that the elections were stolen using the system of absentee ballots. This was one of the reasons ANO changed its mind about mail-in voting from abroad and no longer supports it, he said. A Median poll this month for Czech Radio found that Czechs are already sharply divided on the issue. The ruling coalition rushed the legislation through the lower house of Parliament on Fri. without worrying about the risks.
